a handgun to a baltimore county school. >> this time the quick actions of a teacher prevented any bloodshed. nadia ramdass has that story. good morning. >> good morning. students will be returning to class with extra counselors on hand. the boy accused of pulling out the gun is in police custody and is expected to be charged as a juvenile. nobody was injured. if it wasn't for a quick- thinking teacher, it could have ended differently. it was a frantic scene involving a classmate on tuesday morning. students say an eighth-grader pulled out a loaded gun and aimed it at his teacher, fellow classmates, and himself. the eighth-graders credit the teacher with taking away the handgun and defusing the situation. >> he was waving it around. he aimed it at a student. the teacher stepped in front of her -- the student that he aimed it at. she was, like, "put the gun down." >> she lunged toward him, bent his hand back, and smacked it out of his hand and yelled "no" and had him in an arm lock. >> police say the weapon the boy was handling belongs to his grandfather, norman gatewood. gatewood is charged
it suddenly pulled over on the shoulder of northbound i-95 near the russell street exit in downtown baltimore. authorities tell 11 news at some point armetta got out of the vehicle and somehow ended up falling off this ramp, about a 47-foot fall to his death, into this wooded area. >> i can't believe it. >> joy scott of bel air lived next door to the family for almost two years before the family moved out a few weeks ago. scott's four children adore the officer, who they call mr. charles. >> a great police officer from what i could tell. great, great neighbor. i mean, there's other people in this neighborhood that are very upset by this. >> armetta is the second police officer to die this week. thursday, charles mccato died in a car accident on his way home from work. armetta was a husband and the father of a young girl who, according to the department, turned 1 monday. wbal, tv 11 news. >> the cause of officer armetta's death is still under investigation. we're told funeral arrangements are being made. >>> city police are investigating an early morning shooting in northwest baltimore. office

brought football back to baltimore. 11 news sunday morning starts right now. >> welcome to the sunday news. our top stories in a moment. first what a day it was yesterday, weather wise. >> we had some very strong storms through the area. even a few reports of severe weather, whether it be in montgomery, washington county, frederick county, also possible funnel reported by an officer near sandy point. so possibly there was a funnel near the area. nonetheless, we did have some strong storms that brought down some trees. as we look at hd doppler, we can see that front finally moving off shore. rain showers still left along the lower eastern shore including rain right now in ocean city, but it has cleared out as you look across southern maryland, baltimore, even in the western start of the state. this is all changing now as we get throughout the day. that front is heading off shore. we are looking for beautiful conditions. currently around 60 degrees. we're moving for high temperatures up near 80. you're gonna wake up to clouds and a few showers across the lower eastern shore. and cooling skie
for information into a double shooting in east baltimore. it happens near east pratt street. a portion of the road was blocked off. there was shattered glass on the side of the road. more information as it becomes available. police all looking for information into a separate double shooting. police say two people were shot. one of the victims were shot in the leg. both victims are in the hospital. a baltimore county mother is dead following a weekend shooting. >> police are calling her death senseless. kim dacey is doing double duty with the latest on that investigation. >> 22 year-old larelle amos was engaged to be married and worked with suntrust bank. police say she was not the intended subjects. she was at a party in the front yard of a home of the alameda when shots rang out. one struck her in the chest. the shots came from down the street on the alameda. police are calling this a senseless death. they are asking for the public's help to track down whoever did this. >> unacceptable. will not rest until this is completed and we have whoever is involved. i want them to come for it. if somebody
for the funeral of a baltimore city police officer. nadia ramdass has the details of. >> police officer forrest taylor will be laid to rest today. he leaves behind a wife and two children. the veteran died late last week after complications from surgery. the surgery stemmed from an accident he was involved with while on duty. he had been responding to a call with his signal lights on, ran through a red light, and collided with another car. officials are considering it a line of duty death. services for officer taylor are scheduled for later today on 5200 north charles street in north baltimore. visitation begins at 10:00 a.m.. be advised a traffic advisory has been issued due to the funeral service. expect traffic delays on charles street which will be closed. it is expected to be closed until 1:00 p.m. today. nadia ramdass, wbal-tv 11 news. >> thank you. harford county sheriff's office after a deputy was killed in on duty. he crossed two lanes of traffic and crashed into two trees. investigators were to remove him from the vehicle -- investigators worked to remove him from the vehicle. >> it i

this morning from baltimore. former ravens owner art modell has died. he passed away early this morning after a brief hospital stay at johns hopkins. modell bought the cleveland browns in 1961 and moved the team to baltimore in 1996. that move made him a hero in charm city but it made him hated back in cleveland. maryland governor martin o'malley issued a statement that says in part, quote, art brought the game and spirit of football back to baltimore. he helped reinvigorate baltimoreans' sense of pride in their team and their city. art modell was 87 years old. >>> checking headlines now and beginning overseas, two american soldiers died in afghanistan yesterday when their army scout helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the nation. also the afghan defense ministry fired hundreds of afghan soldiers in an investigation into insider attacks against nato trainers following a rash of green on blue killings. afghanistan is reevaluating soldiers to stop the attacks. >>> hurricane isaac's aftermath is posing big problems for fishermen. some waterways are clogged with debris which has blocked the

at guantanamo bay for six years. >>> the 17-year-old perry hall high school student shot in baltimore on the first day of classes is finally hope now. he was randomly hit by a bullet when another student opened fire in the cafeteria. the suspect is due in court for a bail review later this week. >>> it has been two and a half weeks since a 17-year-old girl from kettering was killed in her home on chartsey street. police are still searching for a suspect and motive. last night, hundreds of residents packed the community cent are to get an update on the murder of amber stanley. bridge county police hosted the meeting asking for help in solving the case. amber stanley was shot and killed after an armed man broke into her home. her mother attended last night's meeting and is hoping someone will step forward with information. >> we need help. we need the community to pull together and get this person or persons, whoever did this horrendous murder, that killed my baby, my baby girl. >> detectives want anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual on the night of august 22nd to contact
